Petco and Petsmart are the two largest pet supply retailers in the US. Both have decided against selling dogs and cats, choosing instead to hold adoption events in their stores. They do, however, sell small animals such as rodents, birds, fish, and reptiles.
Unfortunately, instead of being leaders in the industry, many Petcos and Petsmarts have substandard animal care policies and employ untrained staff.
PETCO Animal Supplies
Although lawsuits and protests have brought PETCO's cruel treatment of animals into the public eye only recently, I have received a steady stream of complaints from Petco employees and customers for more than a decade.
It is also important that you call PETCO's customer hotline at 1-888-824-PALS and/or e-mail PETCO at AnimalsFirst@PETCO.com. For after-hours complaints, please call PETCO at 858-453-7845, extension 5858. When calling PETCO's hotline, please be sure to obtain an incident number and ask for the name of the person you speak with.
An important note for current PETCO employees: An anonymous Animal Care Hotline is available to you. The number should be posted in your store's break room and/or easily obtainable from training materials, paycheck stubs, etc. You are not required to provide your name when calling with concerns. PetSmart, Inc. (PETM) is the largest specialty retailer of services for pets. The company operates more than f 885 pet stores in the United States and Canada. The first two PetSmart stores opened in Phoenix, Arizona in 1987. Petsmart has come under fire from the animal rights groups due to its substandard animal care and its use of glue traps. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has started a boycott of the company until it stops the sale of all animals. FILING A COMPLAINT WITH PETSMART You can use Petsmart's online customer service form: http://www.petsmart.com/global/customerservice/storeFormRequest.jsp
